Nemea, Corinthia
Nemea is a county of the province of Corinthia, Peloponnesos, Greece and is the largest Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)-wine zone of Greece. Her name is intwined with Agiorgitiko, i.e. the grape of St. George (Named after the abbey of St. George, located in the same area).
Typical characteristic of Nemea is the complicated geomorphology and the diversity of the soil which in turn makes the general region one of the most versatile vinification
zones of the Old World.
In a slightly different tone, Nemea is also known as the place where Hercules achieved his first of the twelve labours (The Nemean Lion). As the legend has it, Hercules got wounded while fighting The Lion and his blood soaked the soil of the nearby vinyeards. The local wine went by ever since as "The blood of Hercules"...
